I feel that in creative jobs, it is very important to keep trying new things every so often. I used to love it when I had the opportunity to go rock climbing as it wasn’t that common a thing to me, despite falling off one and ending up in an ankle support almost a decade ago.
Recently I got the opportunity to photo a BNU Climbing session, and there was always one thing that I wanted to do from when I knew I was doing it. I had to climb the wall and shoot down, I just had to. Yes I know that going up the wall with £2k worth of gear isn’t the best idea but it was something that I was not going to miss out on.
I had my strap over me plus a couple of backup lines incase I did happen to decide to drop my camera. Apart from that, it was almost like any other sports shoot, just a case of finding those angles in the climbing centre that worked with light and getting around and using obstructions. I do tend to like out of focus elements in the foreground as well as the background as I feel it adds depth and makes you really focus on what’s happening with the subject.
